Emergency Management
Emergency Management for the Village is led primarily by our Fire, Police and Public Works Departments, with the support and assistance of all operating departments in the Village. In order to assure full coordination of our efforts, the Village has formed an interdepartmental Emergency Management Team, which meets approximately twice a month. The four pillars of Emergency Management are preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation from natural and man made disasters.
The Village’s emergency management initiatives include:
Connect-CTY Community Notification System
Emergency Operations Plan (EOP)
Adoption of National Incident Management System (NIMS)
Emergency Response Training for Staff
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
BACOG Initiatives
Medical Volunteer Group

Connect-CTY Community Notification System
- The Village of Barrington is pleased to announce the launch of the Connect-CTY™ service, our new village-to-resident notification system. With this service, village leaders can send personalized voice messages to residents and businesses within minutes with specific information about time-sensitive or common-interest issues such as road closures, utility problems, or missing child alerts, crime alerts, etc. Click here for more details.
Emergency Operations Plan
- The Village has had an EOP for many years. The plan designates responsibilities and assignments for various Village personnel in the event of an emergen
cy.
- The Village is in the process of completely revising and updating the plan. The Village anticipates formally adopting the revised plan in September 2007.
NIMS Compliance
- NIMS stands for “National Incident Management System”, an initiative of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). NIMS is a standardized system for emergency operations and terminology that will eventually be utilized for every unit of government in the United States. The need for a standardized system was dramatically highlight by both the 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina disasters.
- Becoming “NIMS Com
pliant” is a huge undertaking for local governments. We are proud to say that Barrington is “ahead of the curve” of most communities with regard to NIMS compliance, as is the State of Illinois, compared to most other states.
- Part of our NIMS compliance efforts involves a complete revision of the official Village of Barrington Emergency Operations Plan. We are well under way with this work and anticipate completion and adoption of the new plan by the fall of 2007.
Training

- All Village of Barrington emergency response employees undergo regular training as a normal part of their employment. However, the Village, in response to the NIMS initiative, has embarked on a stepped-up program of emergency training that will eventually encompass all Village employees in various degrees. This will greatly enhance the Village’s response capabilities.
CERT

-
CERT stands for “Community Emergency Response Team”, a national program (administered locally) that recruits and trains citizen volunteers to assist in emergency situations. In cooperation with the Rotary Club, the Village has initiated a local CERT program. To date, we have provided training for approximately 40 citizen volunteers. This program is still in its early stages. If you are interested in becoming a CERT volunteer, contact Deputy Fire Chief John Feit.
BACOG Initiatives

- The Village is leading efforts to coordinate emergency planning with other BACOG communities, in order to effectively deal with area-wide emergencies. To date, we have sponsored two organizational meetings on coordination of area-wide issues, and have created two BACOG emergency planning groups: a Logistics Committee, chaired by Fire Chief Jim Arie, and a Community Preparedness Outreach Team, chaired by Police Chief Jeff Lawler.
